The homestead exception is one of a Texan’s most valued rights. Its future has been uncertain as the US Congress considers revising bankruptcy laws. DallasNews.com is reporting a breakthrough today that will protect the homestead exception for Texans. “Under the agreement, reached by bipartisan negotiators from the House and Senate, Texans who can’t pay their debts would still be able to prevent creditors from seizing their homes — so long as the home was purchased at least 40 months prior to filing for bankruptcy”

The Houston Chronicle reports that “Enron may have overstated the value of its assets and financial contracts last year by as much as $24 billion, the company told federal regulators Monday.” The report continues to place blame on Enron executives and auditors at Arthur Andersen.
By early May, Houston shoppers could be able to bank, get their hair done, buy groceries, new clothes and a car, gas up and go — all from the same location.
Only a week of cheap auto inspections left for Texans in Collin, Dallas, Denton, Harris, and Tarrant counties. On May 1 the state’s new emmissions test progam begins and the cost for annual inspections jump to $39.95. In 2003, the requirement is scheduled to extend to Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston and Montgomery counties, and in 2004 to Chambers, Liberty and Waller counties. (via Houston Chronicle.com)
